It is important to determine what chemical agent the suicide was caused by. Time is a factor that significantly influences the effectiveness of toxicological testing 22. The suicide attempt data collected in the period from 1999 to 2020 are shown in Table 1 and distributed by year and intoxication substance. Drug poisoning can also be of a mixed nature, especially if multi-drug poisoning or alcohol and drug poisoning occurs 12. Mixing alcohol with drugs intensifies its effects, which may have tragic consequences, especially for people already burdened with mental problems. Suicide is the act of deliberate taking one’s own life, whereas a suicide attempt is any non-fatal suicide behavior that might have been displayed with or without an intent to take one’s own life 5.
How alcohol misuse relates to death by suicide.
The high number of rich-in-information reports gathered by the FAERS may be used for a drug-by-drug assessment useful to design more informed and specific regulatory interventions. Its real-time representativity, in particular, may detect emerging problems in a timely manner and drive appropriate interventions to limit intentional overdose deaths. The dosage information, when enough data are gathered and accurately cleaned, may also be useful in estimating real-world LDs. Our methodology may therefore be applied to the FAERS to investigate more specific emerging problems. It could also be applied sud counselor meaning to other, more representative databases to gain a better insight on specific countries or regions. Many factors may have contributed to these increases in alcohol-related deaths.
Alcohol Misuse and Suicide Risk
- However, more investigation is required before making any statements on the link between alcohol and suicide.
- They include deaths where the primary (or underlying) cause of death listed on the death certificate was one of 58 alcohol-related causes.

- The suicide attempt data collected in the period from 1999 to 2020 are shown in Table 1 and distributed by year and intoxication substance.
- For example, we observed a peak in varenicline DSP in 2007, in correspondence with an FDA investigation on varenicline-induced suicidal ideation and self-harm.
In this study, the number of emergency-room patients admitted to psychiatric services did not vary significantly among the various months, including the Christmas month of December. In presenting this general topic, we will first examine the utilization patterns of psychiatric services during Christmas. The more you drink, especially in a short period of time, the greater your risk of alcohol poisoning.
Since 2017, there has been a steady decline in the number of suicides under the influence of alcohol. In 2017, alcohol was found in 602 suicide victims, whereas in the year 2020 it was found 521 suicides. Our study has limitations inherent to spontaneous reporting systems analysis (e.g., underreporting, unverified and incomplete reports, notoriety bias). Therefore, the use of the FAERS is appropriate only to generate hypotheses to be verified by further studies.
Treatment Options
Review methods focused on identifying how studies approached area-level SDOH and different mortality outcomes. After removing duplicates, two reviewers screened each abstract to verify that the article examined the association between alcohol-related mortality and at least one area-level variable. The authors reviewed the full texts when the abstract lacked sufficient information to determine eligibility. Also reviewed were reference lists of included papers and relevant review articles to identify additional cited references that met inclusion criteria. A limitation of the search strategy is that, although approximately half of cirrhosis and liver disease deaths are related to alcohol,20 not all studies specified whether they included only alcohol-related cirrhosis/liver disease or any type of cirrhosis/liver disease. Thus, this review may include mortality from liver diseases not attributable to alcohol.
Binge drinking
Eight studies reported the association between AUD and suicidal ideation, 15 studies reported the association between AUD and suicide attempt, and 14 studies reported the association between AUD and completed suicide. Since four studies 29,30,46,52 have reported the association between AUD and suicidal ideation, suicide attempts, and completed suicide concurrently, therefore, the number effect sizes given in the forest plots is more than the total number of included studies. Some cohort studies reported RR and some others as well as the case-control and cross-sectional studies reported OR. A suicidal ideation is “thinking about, considering, or planning for suicide” 16.
Raising awareness in these age groups about the severe consequences of substance abuse and chemical dependence requires a clinical approach to young, impressionable minds that are still developing. Adolescents are exposed to a lot of misinformation and skewed perceptions of drug culture through social media and society in general. It is critical to provide them with accurate information through a lens of empathy and compassion.
When investigating the available event dates, most of these results were lost. Therefore, speculations about DSP trends should carefully consider the kind of date chosen, and also the potential bias resulting from regulatory actions and mass media communications 44. For example, we observed a peak in varenicline DSP in 2007, in correspondence with an FDA investigation on varenicline-induced suicidal ideation and self-harm. The FDA added a black-box warning to the varenicline package insert in 2009, but subsequent studies failed to establish causality and the warning was removed in 2016 45. Safety planning is a brief intervention to help individuals survive suicidal crises by having them develop a set of steps to reduce the likelihood of engaging in suicidal behavior.
Appendix 1 indicates studies that considered an area’s age distribution40,47,71,72,74 or gender or sex distributions37,44,47,53,55,71,72,74 in relation to the mortality outcomes. Theoretically driven future research could provide more meaningful investigation of how demographic composition might either cause or reduce alcohol-related mortality, such as through social norms related to alcohol use or attitudes about driving after drinking. Multilevel analyses may be most informative for addressing these questions.
